Skills & Social: 8 - 12 yrs / 12 - 16 yrs

Junior Skills & Social: £38.50 Per week
Friday 9:30am – 3pm | 8 – 12 Yrs

Junior Skills and Social provides the perfect blend of knowledge and skill building with being active, creative and enjoying self-directed play.  Young people build friendships, learn to co-operate and work as a team.  The positive and enriching environment enables young people to grow in confidence, bravery and understanding, overcome anxiety and develop a positive mindset.  Many of our attendees have been with Rama for several years, which creates cohesion and a positive team vibe.  New members are welcomed by all, and quickly settle into the group.

Sessions are themed each week or run as a half-termly project.  Topics include history, the world, festivals, current affairs, seasons, creative arts and outdoor learning.  Activities include art, crafts, storytelling, sports, film making, Lego, games, bushcraft, nature, language, construction, cooking, literacy and numeracy.  Young people contribute to planning and enjoy being able to see their ideas come to life.  We value time outdoors in nature, being active and developing skills.

Senior Skills & Social: £38.50 Per week
Wednesday 9:30am – 3pm | 12 – 16 Yrs (existing members can continue until 17 yrs on agreement)

Our Senior Skills & Social group provides a space to explore topics in a bit more depth, pulling in the experience and knowledge of young people, together with the session leaders, to provide a supportive learning space where strengths are recognised and young people build confidence and life skills.  Young people establish connections and friendships, learn how to co-operate and work together.

The positive, welcoming and relaxed environment, based on mutual respect, supports young people to grow in confidence, bravery and understanding of each other.  Many will overcome anxiety, learn more about who they are and what they need and develop a positive mindset.  This is the perfect group to prepare for future group environments such as college or work.

Sessions are themed each week, in addition to occasional mixed sessions where we offer unconnected activities. Topics include history, the world, festivals, current affairs, personal development, mindset, creative arts and outdoor learning.  Activities include art and crafts, music, drama, sports (such as rounders, dodgeball or badminton), film making, games (young people love Empires, Mafia and a range of ball games – many have been developed by them or the leaders!

There is also an opportunity to cook indoors and outside on the fire, develop survival skills, connect with nature and tackle problem solving.  Young people contribute to planning and enjoy being able to see their ideas come to life.  We value time together, discussion, debate and game play.

Maths & English: 10 - 16 yrs

(Existing members can continue in Year 12 by agreement)

Maths & English: £26 per morning per week
Monday and Tuesday 9:30am – 10:15am | 10 – 14 Yrs (over 14 yrs by agreement)
Thursday 9:30am – 10:15am | 14 – 16 Yrs (Existing members can continue in Year 12 by agreement)

We no longer run days at different levels, as our new small group approach (utilising our new breakout space) allows us to tailor learning to each student’s needs within the same session.

Maths and English are taught in three sessions during the morning with plenty of movement breaks.  Each topic has one session, then the third session is for putting learning into practice, with time to ensure understanding.

We will sometimes run cross-curriculum sessions where literacy and numeracy skills will be intertwined, making for a more real-life learning experience.

Rama Life offers maths and English groups tailored to young people’s needs, using a mix of full classes (up to 15 students) and smaller groups for targeted support. Sessions often include hands-on learning to build skills, confidence, and knowledge.

Monday and Tuesday groups are for ages 10–14 and follow a flexible functional skills framework, allowing teachers to adapt to interests, knowledge gaps and learning needs. Young people can stay in these groups until Year 9 or 10, when they typically move to the Thursday group, though exceptions can be considered.

Our Thursday group is aimed at Year 10+ and focuses directly on the Functional Skills programme, with the potential to achieve a Level 2 qualification (GCSE equivalent) through an external centre. While Rama Life provides high quality teaching, external exams require additional home study. Learning is delivered in an engaging and supportive way, reducing stress often linked to school trauma. Guidance for exam preparation is available on request.

——————————–

GCSE’s

GCSEs are not essential and can be pursued later through home study, college, or as a mature student. For most young people, GCSE Maths includes more than they need, often causing unnecessary stress—especially for those already facing learning barriers.

Rama Life focuses on the more accessible and practical Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in Thursday sessions, with support provided at appropriate levels if learners aren’t ready for Level 2.

While college entry doesn’t require qualifications, confidence and foundational skills in maths and English help with transitioning to GCSEs if desired. Those aiming for maths-related careers can study GCSE Maths independently or through college, and Rama Life can offer guidance and support.

Our learning environment is supportive and encourages students to embrace mistakes as part of the process. We use games, real-life tasks, and problem-solving to make learning enjoyable, and promote reading in all forms—from novels to manuals and recipe books.

Afternoon Programmes: 10 - 16 yrs

(Existing members can continue in Year 12 by agreement)

Explore: Creative Arts, History and Natural World
Monday 1pm – 3pm | 10 – 14 Yrs (over 14 yrs by agreement)
£16 Per week

Explore is brand new for Monday afternoons and is run as 2 x 50 minute sessions with a break.

Each session will explore a different activity – sometimes they will be linked by a common theme, sometimes they will be topical, and, where possible, youth-directed.

Our main focus will be on art, crafting, history, the world around us, which all combine through the idea of storytelling, creativity, connection and expression.

Young people will be introduced to different materials and artists and have the chance to work on existing skills and develop new ones relating to art, crafting and other forms of creative expression.  In addition to practical activities, young people will develop their knowledge of the ancient world and the ‘stories’ behind well-known (and lesser well-known) people, places and pieces of art.

This group will also have the opportunity to engage in other styles of ‘art’, including poetry and performance.  This is all “opt in” so young people can choose how they get involved – it could be as part of what is happening, or by designing props.  This group is a perfect confidence builder and a great way to try out different ways to be artistic.

No previous experience or “skill level” needed – this is an open-access group that encourages creative expression in a non-critical and non-judgmental environment.

Explore is ideal for those who love to be creative.

Engage: Science, Engineering, Enterprise, Problem Solving
Tuesday 1pm – 3pm | 10 – 14 Yrs (over 14 yrs by agreement)
£16 Per week

**With Guest Specialist Teachers**

Engage is brand new for Tuesday afternoons and is run as 2 x 50 minute sessions with a break.

Each session will explore a different activity – sometimes they will be linked by a common theme, sometimes they will be topical, and, where possible, youth-directed.

Our main focus will be on how things come together and work together –  be it in the world of science, engineering or construction.  Using this understanding outdoors will also be a factor, through tools and campfire skills.  Enterprise will be a thread through the year, bringing in real-life application of maths-based skills, ensuring our ongoing fundraising and marketing bring in a good return.

The group will learn some fundamentals of science and get to undertake experiments and activities to help make concepts relatable and understandable!  This group will also undertake some cookery, which is a great skill and is chemistry in action!

No previous experience or “skill level” needed – this is an open-access group that encourages critical thinking and problem solving in a non-critical and non-judgmental environment.

Engage is ideal for those who are natural question askers who want to understand the way things work.

Venture
Thursday 1pm – 3pm | 11 – 16 Yrs
(Existing members can continue in Year 12 by agreement)
£16 Per week

Our Venture programme is everything a teenager needs to be more engaged and involved in their own journey and to help them build essential skills for the future.  Our sessions offer a combination of theoretical and practical skills in addition to personal development, helping them understand more about who they are, their skills and their values, and what next steps will work well for them.

This age is often an intense time of change and development, so they will also be encouraged to get creative with some art and wellbeing sessions, and each week will involve some form of mindfulness/stress release.  Young people will develop connections within the group and be able to engage in interesting conversations that allow them to explore their thoughts and opinions and hone their communication skills.

Sessions are delivered in an engaging and enjoyable way and include topics such as personal finances, employment, further and higher education, government and politics, transport and wellbeing.

Practical skills are hands-on and include first-aid, cooking, cleaning, ironing, tying a tie, sewing and fixing a bike puncture!

All the skills we cover are highly relevant and useful.  They enable young people to understand what goes into running a “home”, how to transition from home education to a college or apprenticeship, what University is like (and how much it costs!) and how to make a great impression in an interview.

We have inspiring visitors come into the group to encourage, motivate and to answer questions – in February 2025, they were visited by a Chef who taught them to make different canapes!

Leaders will support young people to seek out and access work experience (when they are ready to do so) and as with all our older groups, can also undertake the Duke of Edinburgh programme with us.

This is truly an essential group to help Venture into young adulthood.
